Physical Therapy

In addition to clinical practice, other activities encompassed in the physical therapy profession include research, education, consultation, and administration.  Direct Access allows you to begin physical therapy WITHOUT a doctor's prescription. The work done by physical therapists in the integumentary specialty do work similar to what would be done by medical doctors or nurses in the emergency room or triage. In the province of Quebec, prospective physiotherapists are required to have completed a college diploma in either health sciences, which lasts on average two years, or physical rehabilitation technology, which lasts at least three years, to apply to a physiotherapy program or program in university.

In the past decade, each of Canada's physical therapy schools has transitioned from 3-year Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy (BScPT) programs that required 2 years of pre-requisites university courses (5-year bachelor's degree) to 2-year Master's of Physical Therapy (MPT) programs that require pre-requisite bachelor's degrees.

The accredited program was initially for a Master of Physical Therapy, but has since converted to a Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.), which gained final approval through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board on January 29, 2009. A brand new building dedicated to Physical Therapy and surrounding health sciences is underway, and is scheduled for completion in January 2018. Employment of physical therapists is projected to grow 34 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.

As of 2015, professional physical therapist education programs in the United States only offer the DPT degree. Physical therapists may utilize surgical instruments, wound irrigations, dressings and topical agents to remove the damaged or contaminated tissue and promote tissue healing. Salaries vary based on position, years of experience, degree of education, geographic location and practice setting. The KSPT faculty is an exceptional group of clinicians and scholars dedicated to excellence in physical therapy education. Physical therapists use different forms of treatment depending on the type of patient they are caring for.

Physical therapists provide care for people in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes. Our fully accredited DPT program was one of the first graduate physical therapy programs in the nation and is ranked in the top 25% of physical therapy programs by U.S. News & World Report. This speciality of physical therapy is most often found in the out-patient clinical setting. Integumentary physical therapy includes the treatment of conditions involving the skin and all its related organs. Physical therapists spend much of their time on their feet, working with patients. The ASU Physical Therapy Department was granted full accreditation by the CAPTE on October 30, 2002.

Beginning in Fall 2015, the Krannert School of Physical Therapy will join the University's other healthcare and wellness-related disciplines and industry partners in UIndy's new Health Pavilion , which will provide clinical facilities to serve the community and classroom and lab facilities for academic and research endeavors.

Our graduates have historically performed well on the physical therapist licensure exam and are highly regarded in the physical therapy job market. In 2015, there were more than 200 programs for physical therapists accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Only physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) licensed by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners (TBPTE) can provide physical therapy in Texas. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of physical therapists will grow by 36% between 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.
